Before you begin using AvePoint tyGraph, ensure that you have a valid subscription and follow the steps to configure your environment. This includes connecting your tenant to AvePoint Online Services, setting up authentication profiles for Microsoft 365 data access, and collect reporting data.

Initial Configuration in AvePoint Online Services

Complete the following configurations in AvePoint Online Services:

  1. Sign Up for AvePoint Online Services – To sign up for a tyGraph account, you must first sign up for an account in AvePoint Online Services.

  2. Your AOS tenant owner or service administrators must connect your Microsoft 365 tenants to AvePoint Online Services first. For details, refer to Connect Your Tenants to AvePoint Online Services.

  3. To connect your tenant to AvePoint tyGraph using the app profile authentication method, refer to Manage App Profiles for tyGraph.

Get Started in AvePoint tyGraph

Refer to the following steps to get started in AvePoint tyGraph:

  1. Sign in to AvePoint tyGraph with a Microsoft 365 account or local account. The system will begin to initialize your data.

  2. Data initialization and scan – During the data initialization process, tyGraph retrieves tenant information from AvePoint Online Services. This process may take about 10 minutes, during which no actions can be performed. Once initialization is complete, the tenant will automatically start the scan job to collect data. You can navigate to Settings > Scan > Precheck to verify the permissions, roles, and configurations required for data collection. For additional details on scan status tracking and prerequisites check, refer to Scan Job Status.

    NOTE

To ensure smooth data collection and reporting in AvePoint tyGraph, confirm the following required settings are properly configured:

    • Enable audit logs to capture user activities across workloads

    • Disable the anonymization of Microsoft 365 usage reports.

    • For Viva Engage reports, the app consent user must have at least the Viva Engage Verified Administrator role.

    • To enable data collection on your SharePoint pages, install the tyGraph Pages Engine app into your SharePoint environment. For details, refer to Install the tyGraph Pages Engine App.

  3. Report visuals – When the harvesting job is complete, you can view the reports in AvePoint tyGraph. We provide the following methods to explore report analytics:

    • Web-based reports – If your tenant has purchased the relevant report modules in the subscription, you can view Pulse, SharePoint, Copilot adoption, and Viva Engage reports online in Report center.

    • Power BI embedded reports – To access the Power BI embedded reports for the purchased report modules on the Analytics page in tyGraph, ensure that the Power BI embedded module is included in your subscription. See View Power BI Reports for Purchased Modules for more details.

      NOTE

Data from Pages and SharePoint are combined into a single Power BI model, enabling you to view Pages data in the SharePoint report. Ensure the tyGraph Pages Engine app is installed to enable data collection on your SharePoint pages.

    • Power BI reports in Microsoft Power BI – You can view visual reports for purchased modules in Microsoft Power BI by installing tyGraph reporting tools in the following methods:

      • If your organization hasn’t purchased the Power BI embedded module for your subscription, refer to Connect Power BI Reports to Your Data to install the reporting tools in Microsoft Power BI.

      • If your organization has purchased the Power BI embedded module for your subscription, go to Settings > Power BI template / Web part to install tyGraph Power BI template apps via the links to AppSource.

    • tyGraph Pages Site Analytics web part – To add the tyGraph Pages Site Analytics web part to a page in SharePoint Online, it is necessary to install the app packages for the tyGraph Pages Engine and tyGraph Pages Web Parts into SharePoint by following the instructions in tyGraph Pages Web Part Installation.

  4. Optional configurations for customizing and managing tyGraph

    • User property configuration – User property configuration allows you to choose which user properties and extension attributes from Microsoft Entra ID appear in reports, customizing data for your organization. To learn more about configuring user properties and attributes, refer to Property Management.

    • Data privacy configuration – By default, AvePoint tyGraph collects all personal information for its reports. To control and obfuscate sensitive personal information in reports, you need to define your preferred level of data protection. For details on data protection configuration, refer to Data Privacy.

      NOTE

Business users can choose whether to opt out of having their user information collected for reports, see Personal Data Protection.

    • Power BI (RLS) configuration – Row-Level Security (RLS) restricts data access in Power BI based on user-defined rules. To configure data visibility for users based on defined specific access rules, refer to Power BI (RLS).

    • User management – To manage users or groups and grant them access to specific tyGraph report modules, refer to the instructions in the User Management section.

    • Enable AI services – Use Azure OpenAI to enhance user productivity by automating prompts categorization, analyzing reports, and offering actionable insights and recommendations on each of report pages and the benchmarking pages. If the Categorize Copilot prompts using Azure OpenAI option is turned off, the Prompts report under Report center > Copilot adoption will be disabled. For details, refer to Enable AI Services.

    • Copilot prompt exclusion – To avoid processing Copilot prompt data from sensitive users or phrases, you can follow the instructions in the Copilot Prompt Exclusion section to exclude users or prompting strings that might be sensitive.

    • SharePoint site data collection (Only available to reports of SharePoint and Pages) – To customize which SharePoint sites are included or excluded from data collection, refer to the instructions in the Data Collection section.

    • Benchmarking opt-in (Available for the Copilot adoption report and Intranet report) – To compare the implementation and usage of Microsoft's Copilot across different organizations, evaluate how users in your organization interact with and access the intranet, and assess your organization's content publishing performance, you can view the benchmarking data in the correlated reports. For how to register for Benchmarking and view benchmarking data, refer to Benchmarking.
