Home > Content Sources > Storage Optimization > OneDrive > Archive and Destroy Orphaned OneDrives
Export to PDFFor an orphaned user that no longer exists in your organization, this user’s OneDrive is regarded as an orphaned OneDrive.
Orphaned OneDrives can be archived to a storage and then deleted from the Microsoft 365 tenant. Note that orphaned OneDrives under legal hold cannot be deleted after the archiving. To prevent redundant archiving, the archiving management option will be automatically disabled for these OneDrives after the first archive.
Complete the following steps to identify, archive, and destroy orphaned OneDrives:
Scan for orphaned OneDrives via AvePoint Online Services. For detailed instructions, refer to Auto Discovery for Microsoft 365.
For unified management, it is recommended that you configure one container for all orphaned OneDrives. The container will appear in the tree of the Storage Optimization module.
Create site collection level rules to target orphaned OneDrives and set the rule action as Archive and destroy content. For detailed instructions, refer to Manage Rules.
Configure archiving settings to add rules to the orphaned OneDrives. For detailed instructions, refer to Configure Settings.
[Optional] Before archiving and destroying orphaned OneDrives, run a Simulate job to report the OneDrives that meet the configured rules, verifying that the correct OneDrives have been identified. For detailed instructions, refer to Run Simulate Jobs.
Run a Storage optimization job to enforce archive and destruction of the orphaned OneDrives. For detailed instructions, refer to Run Storage Optimization Jobs.
