Get Started

Follow these steps to get started with AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®.

  1. Obtain a Subscription

    • To get a free trial of AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, visit the AvePoint Online Services website (for commercial use) for a 30-day trial subscription.

    • AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® now provides two license models:

      • By capacity – Counts licenses by the protected data size (including the data size and file size) in Salesforce environment. You can go to Salesforce Lightning > Setup > Data > Storage Usage for details.

      • By user seat – Counts licenses from Salesforce users with specific license types. For more details, refer to the Subscription Information section.

  2. Access AvePoint Online Services

    Register for an AvePoint Online Services Account and then register for an AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® account in AvePoint Online Services.

  3. Connect Your Organization

    To protect your Salesforce organization via AvePoint services, first connect the organization to AvePoint Online Services. For details, refer to Connect Your Tenants to AvePoint Online Services.

    NOTE

    Ensure that the registered user of your Salesforce organization has the API Enabled administrative permission assigned in Salesforce Lightning by navigating to Setup > Users > Profiles. This API feature is enabled by default for Performance, Unlimited, Enterprise, and Developer Editions. Some Professional Edition organizations have the API enabled. If it is not enabled in your organization, you may need to contact Salesforce Support for assistance.

  4. Configure the Service App Profile

    In AvePoint Online Services, create a Cloud Backup for Salesforce® app profile for the tenant. For details, refer to Create an App Profile.

    • Cloud Backup for Salesforce® provides subscriptions for Salesforce backup and Salesforce archive, refer to the following for different services:

Salesforce Backup

  1. Configure Backup Scope and Frequency

    Navigate to Cloud Backup for Salesforce® > Backup. Click the More commands button in the upper-right corner of the organization tile, and then click Configure backup settings from the drop-down list. For details, refer to Configure Backup Settings.

  2. Monitor and Manage Backups

    • To configure additional backup settings such as organization management, user management, storage configuration, notifications, API usage, data retention, encryption, and anonymization, refer to Configure Settings.

    • Regularly monitor the backup status and ensure that backups are running as scheduled. For details, refer to Monitor and Manage Your Backup.

    • Use the reports to monitor your subscription, API usage, and activities in Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, and any unusual activities in your Salesforce environment. The following reports are provided:

    • To run Compare jobs to compare data between two different backups or between a backup and the current Salesforce environment, refer to Compare Backup Data.

    • To run a global full-text search to efficiently find what you need and take action based on the Discover results, refer to Discover Backup Data.

  3. Perform the Restore

  4. Perform Sandbox Seeding

    To create templates and run sandbox seeding jobs to seed the backup data to your sandbox organization, refer to Perform Sandbox Seeding.

Salesforce Archive

  2. Monitor and Manage Archiving

    • To configure settings for archiving, such as user management, storage configuration, notifications, and API usage, refer to Configure Settings.

    • Regularly monitor the archiving status, and the storage usage for data archived by AvePoint and for current data in the Salesforce environment. For details, refer to Manage Archive Policies.

    • To generate an Inactive data analysis report for Archive, refer to Manage Inactive Data Analysis.

  3. Perform the Restore

    To restore and export archived data from the AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® interface, refer to Restore Archived Data.

Register for an AvePoint Online Services Account

AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® is integrated with AvePoint Online Services. To register for an AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® account in AvePoint Online Services, you must first register an account in AvePoint Online Services. AvePoint provides the following methods to register an AvePoint Online Services account:

To access AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® through AvePoint Online Services, use one of the entries above to sign in to AvePoint Online Services. For details, refer to the AvePoint Online Services User Guide.

There is a predefined Administrators group in AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, which automatically includes the following users defined in AvePoint Online Services:

  • Service Administrators (including the tenant owner)

  • Application Administrators

Users in the Administrators group have full control permission to AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, which means they can use all of the features of AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®.

In AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, you can navigate back to the AvePoint Online Services home page. Click the AvePoint icon in the upper-right corner of the AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce® interface to go back to the AvePoint Online Services interface, or you can also click on other products to access the corresponding products that you have subscriptions.

Create an App Profile

Once a Salesforce organization has been successfully connected, create a Cloud Backup for Salesforce® app profile for the organization. For details, refer to Create an App Profile in the AvePoint Online Services user guide.

Required Permissions:

  • To back up, archive, and restore your data using AvePoint Cloud Backup for Salesforce®, make sure the account that connect the Salesforce organization in AvePoint Online Services has the API Enabled, Manage Users, and Modify Metadata Through Metadata API Functions/Modify All Data system permissions; To back up/archive data, make sure the account also has the Read permission to all parent object records of the data you want to back up/archive; To back up/archive all files in the environment, make sure the account also has the Query All Files permission. To restore data, make sure the account also has the Edit and Create permissions to all parent object records of the data you want to restore.

  • To back up/archive field values, make sure the account that connects the Salesforce organization in AvePoint Online Services has the Read permission to the fields you want to protect/archive.

  • To back up/archive objects, make sure the account that connects the Salesforce organization in AvePoint Online Services has the Read permission to the objects you want to protect/archive.

  • To back up/archive records of user activities, make sure the account that connects the Salesforce organization in AvePoint Online Services has the View All Data permission.

  • To restore the audit fields, including CreateById and CreatedDate fields, enable the Set Audit Fields upon Record Creation and Update Records with Inactive Owners permissions in Salesforce.

If the connected user does not have sufficient permissions, you need to re-authorize the app profile by following the instructions in Re-authorize an App Profile.

NOTE

Salesforce has published an announcement to restrict the use of uninstalled connected apps from early September 2025. This will not affect your organization if there are no apps to be created/reauthorized. However, for organizations who need to create a new app or reauthorize an app, you must either install the app in your Salesforce environment, or ensure that the user consenting to the app has the following required permissions:

  • If API Access Control is enabled, only the “Use Any API Client permission” gives access to use uninstalled apps.

  • If API Access Control isn’t enabled, trusted users can use uninstalled apps if they have the “Approve Uninstalled Connected Apps” permission
