Placeholder Policy

A placeholder policy dynamically replaces baseline property values with custom values defined in the policy. You can select configurations and properties to target, define custom values with references (e.g., tenant name, tenant ID) and static text, and choose the effective date and target instances on the tenant configurations page. Note that read-only properties are not affected by this policy. A placeholder policy takes effect only after the relevant baselines have been applied to the tenant.

The Placeholder policy tab displays all available policies of this type. To view the detailed information about a specific policy, click its name to open the policy details page.

Create a Policy

Refer to the following steps to create a placeholder policy:

  1. Click Create above the policy table to open the Create placeholder policy page.

  2. In the Basic information step, complete the following information:

    • Policy name – Enter a name for this policy.

    • Description – Enter an optional description.

    • Baseline scope – Select the baselines where you want to apply this policy and click Apply. Baseline assignment can also be completed after you create the policy. For detailed instructions, refer to Apply a Policy to Baseline.

  3. Click Next.

  4. In the Placeholders step, complete the following information:

    1. Select a configuration and a specific property within the configuration.

    2. Enter the property value. For flexibility, you can insert a dynamic reference instead of a static value, for example, tenant name.

    3. Click Add and repeat the steps above to add another placeholder.

  5. Click Next.

  6. In the Review step, you can verify information and edit information if needed. If no more updates are needed, click Create to create the policy.

Apply a Policy to Baseline

Each baseline can have only one placeholder policy assigned. Applying a new policy of the same type will override the existing one upon application. The Baseline scope column in the policy table displays the number of baselines where a policy has been applied, and the Tenant scope column displays the number of tenants that are impacted via the deployment of those baselines.

Refer to the following steps to apply a placeholder policy to baseline:

  1. Select the policy that you want to apply to the baseline.

  2. Click Apply to baseline.

  3. Select the baselines where you want to apply this policy and click Apply.

  4. Click Apply.

Remove a Policy from Baseline

Refer to the following steps to remove a placeholder policy from a baseline:

  1. Select the policy that you want to remove from the baseline.

  2. Click Apply to baseline.

  3. Click the Remove button next to the baseline. Click Remove in the pop-up confirmation window.

  4. Click Apply.

Delete a Policy

To delete a policy that is no longer needed, select the policy and click Delete. Please note that policies currently assigned to any baselines cannot be deleted until they have been removed from all associated baselines.
